Ph.inally D.one: A Journey to Doctorhood

Whew—we made it!

After years of research, writing, rewriting, and wrestling with perfectionism, I’m beyond proud to officially share that I’ve earned my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Urban Education. This milestone represents far more than a title. It is the culmination of deep labor—emotional, intellectual, and spiritual—and a testament to the power of purpose, community, and perseverance.

The dissertation took exactly as long as it needed to. While the road was winding, what came of it was something I’m incredibly proud of:Reclaiming Black GirlHOOD, a study rooted in the brilliance, resistance, and lived experiences of Black girls in Washington, D.C. schools. This work is a love letter to them. Their stories—complex, joyful, and powerful—challenged me, grounded me, and continue to guide my scholarship and service. To every Black girl I’ve had the honor of working with: this is for you.

To my nieces—especially my little Raelyn—may you always know that you are never limited because of where you are from, but that your possibilities are endless because of it.

This journey was not one I walked alone. I want to thank my sister-friends, my mother, my cousins, and my big brother who held me down during the hardest seasons. When the valleys were deep, your love anchored me. Thank you for your unwavering presence.

Finally, to the academic dream team that was my dissertation committee—a powerhouse of Black women scholars—thank you for modeling excellence and care. Your feedback sharpened my analysis, your wisdom expanded my vision, and your mentorship sustained me. I’m honored to have been guided by your brilliance.

This degree isn’t the end—it’s a beginning. It’s a commitment to reach back, to uplift others, and to continue creating liberatory spaces for Black girls and marginalized youth everywhere.

From the bottom of my heart: thank you.
